Heating and Cooling 101

By Rick Hatch, Owner of R&W Heating Energy Solutions, LLC

When it comes to taking care of your homes heating and cooling needs, starting off on the right foot can save you money and frustration down the line.  Asking a contractor for references, proof of licenses/insurance, how long they’ve been in the trade, if they provide 24 hour emergency service, etc., is a great way to get a feel for the company and decide if they’re a good match for you and your home.

Many brands and manufacturers offer continuing education and training on products and services – don’t be afraid to ask if the company and/or technicians keep up to date with the latest technology available by completing these certifications.  If it’s time to think about installing new equipment, ask which manufacturers the contractor installs, and why.  While cost and efficiency are two of the biggest contributing factors, there may be other reasons a contractor uses a certain brand of equipment – for example, they may choose one brand over another, comparable brand, because of offered warranties, more accessible tech support, or a better availability of repair parts when a problem arises.  Keep in mind that the lowest cost does not always equal the best equipment, support, or installation.

A knowledgeable contractor will be able to provide up to date information on town building codes, will pull permits, and will educate homeowners as to utility incentives and rebates, programs, financing options, and special offers available – as there are many!
